Gullfoss Waterfall is one of the most impressive highlights nearby Reykjavik, located in southwestern Iceland, along the Hvítá River.

It is one of Iceland's most popular tourist attractions, known for its beauty and impressive sizeI located close to Reykjavík

Gullfoss, also named the Golden Waterfall in Blaskogabyggd in South Iceland, is a spectacular view of the forces of untouched nature. Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle tour, where you will see all the biggest attractions in Iceland, such as Geysir and Thingvellir.

Gullfoss means "Golden Falls" in Icelandic, and the name comes from the golden hue the waterfall takes on when it catches the light of the setting sun. The waterfall is two separate cascades that drop a total of 32 meters into a narrow canyon below.

Visitors to Gullfoss can walk along a series of trails and observation decks to get different views of the waterfall and its surroundings. There is also a visitor centre and a cafe on site.

In addition to its natural beauty, Gullfoss has a fascinating history. In the early 20th century, plans were made to harness the waterfall's power to generate electricity. However, a young woman named Sigríður Tómasdóttir fought tirelessly to protect the waterfall and prevent its development. Her efforts were successful, and Gullfoss was eventually designated as a protected natural site in Iceland.

Overall, Gullfoss is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Iceland. Its beauty and historical significance make it one of the country's most important natural landmarks.

The size of the waterfall

The water in the waterfall comes from Iceland´s second-biggest glacier, the Langjökull. It plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon that can reach 70 meters in height. If the sun shines, a rainbow can be seen over the falls.
